Evangeline (Evie) Downie is a Professor at Physics and Associate Dean of Research in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. She gained her Masters in Science and PhD at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and spent three years as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Mainz in Germany, before being appointed to a tenure track position at GWU in 2012. She performs nuclear physics experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland and at the Mainzer Mikrotron in Germany to understand the structure and behavior of the proton and neutron, the building blocks of all visible matter. Evie was a first generation college student from Blantyre, a declining industrial town near Glasgow in Scotland. She has worked to further diversity, equity and inclusion through engagement in and national leadership of the American Physical Society (APS) Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics, membership of the APS Committee on the Status of Women in Physics (CSWP), and leadership of the APS Climate Site Visit Subcommittee. Most recently, she was a member of DOE and NSF's Nuclear Science Advisory Committee and helped author the 2023 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science which will guide NSF and DOE investments for the next decade.
